- Legal Aid: There is still Legal Aid for Mediation. It may be free; the government supports mediation and there are funds available. At the initial individual meeting your income will be assessed to see if you are eligible for Legal Aid.
- It’s quicker: The average time for a court case to be completed is 435 days. For mediated cases it is around 110 days.
- Mediation is cheaper: The average cost of vases settled through court is around £4000, the average cost for mediated cases is around £500.00.
- It works to reduce stress: Separating from a partner can be very stressful and this is even before you start talking about children or finances. Studies (April 2012) indicated that 54% of Mum’s and Dad’s reported mental health worsened in the year before separation and 61% in the year after.
- You are in control of the decisions: In mediation you can make the arrangements that meet the needs of your child, you are in control of the decisions, rather than a court make the decision about your children and your financial arrangements.
- Mediators are experts: In dealing with people who are separating or divorcing. We have experience, knowledge and understanding of the legal and emotional process in separation and divorce.
- Assessment: It’s about you. A complete assessment will be undertaken about your situation and that of your children at an individual meeting.
- It is safe: A full assessment will be made at the first meeting and if you feel unsafe being in the same room as you’re ex-partner we will talk to you about ways for this to be managed so you feel safe while you are taking part in mediation.
- Information: Mediators have access to and knowledge of a wide variety of local resources. They may be able to refer you for help or support.
- Mediation works: Choosing mediation is the step to take to enable you to start moving forward with your life. research has found agreements reached through mediation work better and require less court intervention (Kelly 2006).
