SUMMARY:Effective Screening for Domestic Abuse in Mediation
DESCRIPTION:Book Your Place Here \nTrainer Adrienne Cox\nPrimarily for mediators of all levels including those working towards accreditation and newly accredited. This course can also benefit other family professionals working with separated families who would like to spend time reflecting on domestic abuse and their own screening and assessment process. \n  \nThis course will provide participants with the necessary skills to carry out more effective screening for domestic abuse\, ensuring\, as far as possible\, that only clients that are suited to the mediation process proceed to mediation. \nEffective and appropriate screening and assessment of mediation suitability is paramount in ensuring safe and positive outcomes in mediation. \nResearch carried out by Anne Barlow and colleagues in ‘Creating Paths to Family Justice’ in 2017 concluded that ‘inadequate screening may lead to traumatic mediation experiences and / or unfair or dangerous outcomes’. This was again highlighted in the “Assessing Risk of Harm” report published in June 2020. \nIt will highlight perpetrator tactics\, the impact of domestic abuse on the victim / survivor and consider how to recognise the difference between abuse and high conflict. There will be time to take questions on this topic and have a discussion about the challenges being faced by mediators and other professionals\, in screening effectively for domestic abuse online and how these challenges are being overcome. \n  \nCovering the following content:\nPresentation of relevant research to support your practice\nInformation about different risk assessment tools\nSharing of information about the impact of domestic abuse on survivors and their children\nUseful questions\, approaches and strategies to help mediators with their assessment of suitability\nCase study / role play / fishbowl exercises (depending on time) to develop risk assessment skills\nSupporting clients when a decision has been made that mediation is not suitable\nExercises to encourage a deeper understanding of domestic abuse in the mediation context\nGroup discussions to help support best practice \nWednesday 3rd November 2021: 9.30am – 4pm [including breaks] \n6 CPD / SRA \na Zoom event \n£120 ex VAT\nBook Your Place Here \n
